At ZBiotics we use genetic engineering to improve people’s lives directly – in ways they can feel and understand for themselves. We engineer probiotic bacteria to deliver specific benefits; our first breaks down an unwanted byproduct of alcohol and helps you land on your feet the day after drinking. We are leaders in a “GMO 2.0” movement of companies who build groundbreaking consumer products using genetic engineering, and who do so in a manner that is responsible, transparent, and consumer-first. ZBiotics is funded by Y Combinator, Khosla Ventures, and Social Capital.

The Strain Engineering team develops new strains by scarless transformation using a range of specialty plasmids synthesized whole or constructed through PCR and overlap cloning. ZBiotics has developed optimized transformation and screening protocols and we implement design pipelines in Jupyter Notebooks using Python for bioinformatics to source and optimize genes and operon design.

We are looking for a motivated associate to take up residence as a full time plasmid construction engineer and lab tech. The associate will work closely with the VP of R&D who will provide designs, protocols, and training. During the course of work, the associate will have the opportunity to learn about higher level DNA design and gene sourcing/optimization. As part of a small startup you will be a core member of company culture and expected to bring a positive ‘anything is possible’ attitude to solving challenges. There will be opportunities to receive equity compensation.

Responsibilities

  • All stages of routine cloning i.e. PCR, Gibson fusion reactions
  • Transforming B. subtilis: Culturing, plating, screening
  • Maintaining lab supplies (making plates and reagents)
  • Reporting data, maintaining an electronic notebook, presenting in weekly meetings

Requirements

  • M.S./B.S./B.A. in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry OR equivalent experience
  • Experience working independently and managing your own schedule is essential
  • Experience with PCR and Gibson-like cloning is a plus

Are you motivated to be an incredible strain engineer and don’t have the academic credentials? Training is available to the right craft-focused applicants with strong work ethic from any background. Grow with ZBiotics.

ZBiotics provides equal employment opportunities to all applicants. Help us build a team that reflects all of our customers.
